Twilight’s Out! Star IN Color(block) Style Steal!

November 21, 2008 by Designer Ella

Twilight, the cult vampire romance lit that has had followers in victorian and goth fashions, like frilly wrist cuffs, collars, etc., is finally out in theaters. The premiere, however, showed its human stars in their own tastes, and lead actress Kristen Stewart, donned this autumn’s trend of colorblock. Far from punk, 80s, or flamboyantly colored, the frock is still only blood-warm in red, white and gray—but with modern sleek lines.

Remember, characters are played by mere mortal celebrities, with their own tastes, but does the lack of the huge trend that’s currently nicknamed after the flick say something?

Will the underground scenesters, like Etsians (from Etsy.com) soon flock from their wrist warmers and lace to late 2008’s in-scene fashion? Doubtful, but until now the insider trend of patched colors hasn’t been in my view - will it expand to the other circles now?

You be the judge for yourselves; would you like to steal this style (like below)?

For all the recessionistas with a little extra cash, this entire ensemble (aside from the everclassic black pump and any accessories you’d add) costs a total of under $100! (sans shipping and tax)

This pairing blends vamp and Victorian lace
with a subtler take on colorblocking.

Q & Poll: What post content could you read most?

November 18, 2008 by Designer Ella

Almost every day that I don’t write, one “obstacle” my mind feels it faces is that since I’ve been writing infrequently, I *must* make posts count… this leads not to writer’s block but to “topic block”. I’m a nutty little squirrel, yes, so why not just poll my visitors about what I might always more often fall back on?

If you have other ideas, please please leave them in the comments! But do remember the direction I want the site to take. Thanks so much!

Obvy variety is best, but what type of post COULD you read most often?

New/Old Beginnings & Re-Fresh Starts.

November 5, 2008 by Designer Ella

*Warning: this post might be inspired by humbleness, and therefore doesn’t sugarcoat my faults.*

So with my personal weaknesses it’s likely a real killer that I still get paid when I don’t -well- work –on the blogs. Sure I have to come back eventually, and I could make more if I updated like mad, but this fall I’ve felt very ill, so I just depended on getting by.

And even when better, after not blogging for a while, I face the oddest writer’s block. Every. single. time.

And I haven’t even been selling old bags on the bay like I should - it’s just an upsetting/daunting thing to do, I guess.

But I decided to end my break from creating accessories and crafty/knitty goodies. And what started as “try out selling on Etsy.com again before gift-buying stops” turned into addiction and over-time-consuption just like that site tends to inspire.

Although somehow I haven’t been all that “product”-ive with what’s published on my new shop (Ella Mode Made @ Etsy). I’m a “terrible” perfectionist and it’s been hard to get new photos up to my standard. That combined with the slowness of knitting and getting “start this new design project” fever (before finishing the current—the many current) - I’m not really making headway with “finished objects” either.

collage features a Flickr photo of a grey sky by Green Velvet.
depicts: actual grey FL skies, photography issues, sore knitter’s
wrists, sewing machine annoyances, me adoring my online work,
lack of money and waiting for snail mail supplies.

Really even though I just had my 27th birthday and have been living on my own for a year, I’m far from being a grown up. I just … well … stink. At life? Le sigh.

But at least I have talents, and when I use them enough I have good work. Soon, maybe not soon enough, but soon I will have a stocked product catalog and regular blog entries. And money. Oh yeah……..that green stuff, right? Heh.

It’s pretty “stinky” that being disabled forces me to not work well for others, yet I can’t even force myself to work enough, period. (It’s like when in a class the teacher doesn’t check homework.) And government help? It’s not perfect, but I we have HOPE. And that inspires me.

Also I have about a week straight to be alone and work, because my BFF is away, and that combined with writing more about what else I’m involved with (I know I’ve said it before); mainly indie, will help this site be “stocked” with words. I might even add a few related features, but by now you know me and my lack of sticking to plans.

Or is that to say falling through on promises? I think I must start my new year resolution early, and that is to follow the mantra, “What would Barack do?”

You know, if he were only a slightly less awesome, design-y/writer chick. ;-)

*P.S. It didn’t really fit into the article, but I also have my own domain/shop for Ella Mode at http://ellamo.de :-) .

Finally, Lingerie that’s Scholastic! even Nerdy?

October 14, 2008 by Designer Ella

I’m back from a mind’s vaction with some butt fashion! W00t!

Of course it comes from the tamer and more mental-tittilating punny Victoria’s Secret (Pink University, etc.), but this new pink plaid babydoll and matching ruffley panties totally fire up my mind, not just eyes (or shopping gene).

Ruffle Satin Babydoll

But um, a couple notes..

1. It appears the catty catwalk pouts have gone mainstream lingerie modeling. Not cute. To me, pouting is more for appealing to guys’ sympathies and making them do what I want, however does not say, “come here to me (in my bed)”. (I also don’t scowl like a true bitchwhat’s up with that?!)

2. Yes, the back of the babydoll is tapered to show off the behind - cute! But this brings me to the ordering/wish-listing step and reminds me…. In my college days, I was as bootylicious as Kim Kardashian, which - if you’re keeping score - is phattier than even J.Lo. However, I’ve lost weight, and even firmed up down, err back, there - but kept the oomph from weight gain / growing-up-hormones on top — and now I’m worried my top size overpowers my bottom. Uh, what happened to the mix and match age, huh? (Anyone out there want a(n) XS top and S panties??) One thing’s at least for sure, a mall trip with a changing room is on my schedule!

Which if it weren’t for my upcoming birthday would be a sad field trip, for my bank account still thinks I’m a poor college student. Darn political science!

Sex and the City Review,
Late for the Rent Bloomers

September 26, 2008 by Designer Ella

Now with extra special lateness so I could capture the perfect movie photo using Windows!!!
I had to research until I found a setting to disable, or no video caps!
(Look at that Cinderella pic, so worth it. Or else shoot me now - what do you want? I’m a perfectionist. Rare in bloggers, and it’s obvious why. Still please enjoy! *Jedi*)

No, I’m not the perfect demographic for Sex and the City. I have nary a female friend, I live in Florida in a town-like city—even though I dream of working in fashion—yes I don’t even like NYC that much. I hate the cold, I’m a Red Sox fan, but most of all I actually love my bags too much to risk their snatching. Call me scaredy-girly-girl. But hey I have no film crew to protect me, or the money and power of Samantha and Miranda, after all. And heck–I couldn’t even make anyone I know near where I live to see the film in theatres … but I do love fabulous things, and I just couldn’t wait to rent Sex and the City. In so moi style, a fashionably late (even for a rental) writer’s review:

I did grab a hold of the flick early, but on that Monday morning, after being reminded Heroes would premier that night, I was all too excited with my hands on the flick. I threw it on, but could barely stand to last the label-gasms the opening gave me. For my own sanity, I turned it off for a time.

It is a long movie. But that’s one big thing a girl wants from her sex, you know. Still this means make sure you don’t have to sneak away from the screen when it’s half over … once the Big dramatic wedding day starts (a hint is that it’s early on) you’ll soon know you cannot tear yourself away until the cuddling after it’s over. (I do suggest watching this emotional movie with your beloved or dearest friends - all of age of course - and tissues and some sore eye products. Suggested 1, Suggested 2)

It was for the fashionista, for the writer, for the Cinderella-dreamer … it was so for me.

But was the end as satisfying as the best of sex? A girl shouldn’t kiss (and cry) and tell.

But I’ll gladly gossip about some of the juiciest and eye-candiest goodies!!!

To start, like any worth-while late-as-DVD review, the Bonus FeaturesEntry continued, read more »

Tina Fey as Palin/Pohler as Clinton
rouse laughs against sexism

September 15, 2008 by Designer Ella

… or also against conservatism. But any even near-feminist must see (love?) Tina Fey portray Sarah Palin, in those sexy librarian glasses (ok maybe men, too!).

And any near feminist is pro-choice, anyway, right?

If not for that, view it for a great parody of Hilary Clinton that is also leaning negative.

*I wanted to publish this video as soon as a quality one went on the Internet, but life popped up while waiting. Enjoy for the 2nd time, if not first!

The 2nd Second Life Fashion Week - alive?

September 14, 2008 by Designer Ella

There was great buzz about the very 1st virtual fashion week held in Second Life last February, but where is the 2nd Second Life Fashion Week in the uber-important fall showings?

A Fashion Runway in Second Life

A Fashion Runway in Second Life

It’s not much publicized, but thanks to Second Life’s equivalent to Vogue, Second Style, I have the schedule for at least a few shows (fashionably late, I must apologize):

  • Sunday, 9/7 - The Art of Autumn Fashion Show, 1 p.m. Too late, sorry.
  • Saturday, 9/13 - Styles for Seduction Fashion Show - 2 p.m. again, sorry.
  • Sunday, 9/14 - Frida’s Fine Fall Fashion Show - 12 p.m. VISIT LIVE!*
  • Sunday, 9/14 - Mondira Fashion - 1 p.m. VISIT LIVE!
  • Friday, 9/26-Sun. 28 - Impressione Weekend of Beauty - more info

*You must be registered as an avatar and have Second Life installed on your machine to visit the live links.

By the way, I’m working on creating a public calendar
for Lipped Media so both I and any of you may follow
and better remember fashion events!

That is all that seems to be scheduled. The lack of a “hoopla”, especially compared to that of the last SLFW, is due to the 1st being sponsored by iVillage, a big company, which for some reason did not continue their involvement. It’s sad that support for underground and mass-participation / social/equality is low after initial *shiny* novelty wears off. It’s equality sad that a grassroots campaign didn’t keep what could have been (and I pray still will be someday) a phenomenon from growing, let alone prevent from shrinking.
