It’s Flip-Flop Time!

June 9, 2006 at 11:00 am by Designer Ella

Meredith Viera (so long in just a few!) told a delightful story on David Letterman last night about shoes — what else?

She said that when she was a child, at the end of a school year, her mother would take away her school shoes and hand her flip flops, which would be worn ’til season’s end.

So bring on the thongs!

A great new pair is the Kenneth Cole “Jewel Thief.” It’s oh-so fashion forward; certainly not your mom or your daughter’s flip flop! Certainly not the shoe once worn by Meredith, who detests dressing up.

A Trendy Swimsuit for the Model Body

June 6, 2006 at 4:00 pm by Designer Ella

I should be fair to all body types, and some people really have the runway model’s body: tall, skinny, no chest. The swimsuit style I posted last week has a similar, bikini style for this very person. It is perfect for this body type, and pretty much that type alone.

Flatter specifications:

Liz Claiborne Nautical Stripe Bikini– It is a bikini, so your stomach should be flat.
– The top is striped, and the bottom is solid, so it would be best to wear this if you are tall, because breaking up the pattern/color saturation strips the body in pieces. (There is no real benefit to this, as looking tall is not a negative.)
– The diagonal striping on the bust will add width to the chest, this is alright for many, but really great for small chests.
– The shape of the top is even better for medium-small chests, as cleavage will look good in this (and bandeau tops are the best for flat chests).
– The striping under the bust will add a little bit of width.
– The belt will widen the hips, helping to curve out the super skinny, and works well with the strip under the chest.

Sweet Marc Jacobs *Flared* Shorts (on Sale!)

June 6, 2006 at 11:00 am by Designer Ella

Marc Jacobs Collection Flared ShortI love these feminine-flared Marc Jacobs Collection shorts, but I can’t imagine justifying even the sale price: $659 (from $1,100).

They also are not nearly practical for my body type (short and wide-ish, just like this item). Oh, dear.

Is this one of those “model” items? The public swoons and awes over the piece; the poetry, the uniqueness. It is a rare gem, thus deserving of its prestige. But then who wears it? The insanely perfect or rich and the models, of course. I think this is something meant to happen—a very large, purposeful circle. Is that right?

Or maybe H&M will make a pair like this. Now, I just need to get rid of my “wide-ish” problem. And the sewers need to make a cuff-less pair (cuffs are bad for short stature)—Geesh!

Nautical Striped Blouson Swimsuit

June 1, 2006 at 12:00 pm by Designer Ella

Liz Claiborne SwimsuitThe ultimate in 2006 trendy swimwear is this nautical blouson 2-piece by Liz Claiborne. If you want cool and cover from the sun, this tankini hides every spot of the belly. It has tummy control, but I don’t think it’s just for the plus-sized. Sure, it may not be for the very young, but this suit looks nice. With navy stripes, an embroidered anchor and braided straps to mimic a boat’s rope, this suit is the perfect trend (especially for that last year of having a tummy, I wish it to all). But being in a beach theme, it certainly can outlast a craze.

It’s too bad that there aren’t stripes on the bottom piece to elongate a shorter body—the break-up breaks up the line and flow of a form. I just love those diagonal stripes, they’re so flattering. Overall, it’s a stylish suit that appeals better than most designed to cover and hide, something one would want to be seen in. That’s great!

Shorts Suits Bring Business to Summer

May 30, 2006 at 3:00 pm by Designer Ella

A trend for the summer, as reported by What Not to Wear’s Stacy London, is the shorts suit (or the cropped suit). It’s good for casual business and is perfect for the weather. But remember your company’s dress code and remember the temperature air conditioners leave your office. Shorts are hot hot right now, and cropped- or short-sleeved blazers pass through different temps while flattering, so these pieces are also great as mixable separates.

Christian Louboutin - Suede Cork Heeled Shoe

May 30, 2006 at 12:00 pm by Designer Ella

Christian Louboutin Cork HeelThe hottest shoes (IT shoes!) for summer are the red hot Christian Louboutins with cork heels, and Bergdorf Goodman has a brown suede peep-toe slingback version.

The tobacco suede is subtler than a patent black or red, but we still have the classic Louboutin toe, this time in peep-toe cork, and of course the signature red sole.

With a high, high heel and an elastic sling back, this shoe comes in at $670.

Marc Brings Jellies Back in Style

May 25, 2006 at 9:00 am by Designer Ella

Marc by Marc Jacobs plum Circle Jelly Shoes
I’m shocked. Marc by Marc Jacobs has put out jelly sandals (and flats) for summer 2006. Yes, this summer. I’m even more shocked that they are kind of cute, especially these purple “Circle” jelly flats. I don’t have to tell you that they’d be great poolside, but they’re even snazzy, with a “faint glitter finish.”

Also check out these gold Gladiator Jelly Sandals. Both and more styles/colours sell at Net-a-Porter for $134.64.

Friday Cute, Cute Shoe Fest!

May 19, 2006 at 6:00 pm by Designer Ella

I got my Delia’s catalogue in the mail (leftover from my teenage years, it can now be used for blogging!) and I only looked at the cover—it was enough to give me a post topic!

These cute cute peep-toe “Buckle” Flats .. I love that I keep finding more of this style, and I hope you do, too! I imagine it’s much-appreciated for those in search. I was for a while, myself. This pair is the inexpensive option at $29.

But you can fill up a whole basket enough to get free shipping and a Shoe-Spring wardrobe. How’s that for shoe-string budget?

I found all these ADORABLE cute cute cute flats at What a way to kick in the weekend!

Designer Ella’s Top Color Combos For SS06

May 13, 2006 at 10:30 am by Designer Ella

Forget what some Norwegian fashion website says, I think the colours for Spring and Summer are light and airy. Here are the colours that are covering me and/or that I’m coveting, lately.

White House Black Market Crochet Cardigan

  • Teal / Black (the black makes the teal shine)
  • Teal / Tan (I just love teal with anything)
  • White / Tan (simple but boldly trend)
  • White / Black (sophisticated & classy, subdued yet bold)
  • White / Off-white (this can look romantic and luxe)
  • White / More white (I also love white in any lace, or any lace without white! [or crochet … or knit …])

If you’re feeling what I’m feeling, then you may like to check out this Aries Crochet Cardigan from White House Black Market.
