So why on Earth am I avoiding fash blogging during Fashion WEEK?

February 26, 2008 by Designer Ella

Cat WalkIt’s so important to do. It could help this “career” and improve chances (at least from 0.001%) of attending shows. It’s expected, prudent, required(???) and I’m crazy not to.

Blog about the shows during the fashion weeks. And why the heck have I mostly not blogged ‘t all?! (With just one post on a show, and nothing about my Marc Jacobs!!!)

I’m sick of it. What’s expected, what’s done by everyone … and like our current subtitle reads, a basic issue with the “style-us quo.” It’s no good excuse, really, I know. But I couldn’t bring myself, somehow, to do it.

And why not just blog about other things? Possibly the guilt of not doing what I should be doing … and probably the fact that runway shows are unavoidable.

I don’t even really support my decision … I’m just burnt out - yes, burnt out from past years. Back when I covered as much as possible while attending college. With that issue behind me, what the fab is my un-fabbing problem??!

I’m working on thinking of creative alternatives to mass-produced, media-marketed, model-splayed, over-saturation of the mundane and force-fed. Posts in the near future (not long term 100%) will feature the anti all-that. See what’s caused my ill-feelings toward prêt-a-porter is my resurrection of crafting and designing bags after being moved into my apartment enough to justify the extra time spent. Recently, I’ve taken up my destiny-craft; weaving, and it’s allowing me to work faster and I feel confident I can produce purses on a regular basis from now on. Even though I make negative money from it so far, it’s what I really-really-really wish I could be doing full time.

And that interest in indie flows into almost every part of my life, which causes a desire to blog differently. Yet I know that’s not what my long-time — and new-discoverers through old-style posts — want. I need to maintain a balance, and most importantly, just publish. It is my hope I can do it regularly again.

As for the past few weeks, I’m sure many of you understand my woes. Anyone feel similarly?

Max Azria Predicts a Global Warming Autumn

February 2, 2008 by Designer Ella

 BCBG Max Azria dress

A brief look at what BCBG Max Azria is putting forth for apparel in Fall 2008 gives me a sense of disregard for the usually appealed-to northern weather of Fall and Winter. Funny thing.

Not even my recent move down south to Florida changes my mind about this being a slightly negative thing, but c’est la vie. Enjoy the shows!

Vera Wang?

September 11, 2007 by Designer Ella

Vera Wang collage SS 08

What happened to Vera Wang’s skills as a top wedding gown designer? Her entire collection for Spring/Summer 2008 is a bunch of *Sad Sacks*! :-( It’s like “burlap chic” with better fabrics but equally bad colours, oh and sans chic. *Snort* Puh-leaze! Next!

L.A.M.B. Kicks of Fashion Week like a Lion

September 7, 2007 by Designer Ella

L.A.M.B. Spring 2008 preppyUm, since when does NY Fashion Week start on a Wednesday? My bad, I didn’t even know what today’s date was. I’m so out of it since I got out of school, but luckily now I have plenty of time for reporting the catwalk!

OK so I honestly didn’t GET why Gwen Stefani has been respected for fashion design - I didn’t see her as more than a celebresigner. That was until I saw her Spring 2008 collection for L.A.M.B.

Now since when is Gwen Stefani, miss Harijuku-ex No Doubt-Mrs. Rossdale - preppy? (Unfortunately I see Autumn as the preppy season, not Spring. But it’s my fave look, so I won’t complain too much.) Well, her collection was delightfully preppy-youth-hip and her models still looked sexy, funky and cool. Hats off! (Seriously, take that hat off!)

Now one may still see the clothes as still on the teen-music-scene side, but when you see the dresses, it’s all over—you give in. Gwen’s a good designer, and this collection is fantastic. I may even already have my favorite of high fashion Spring 2008. Oh Gwen, come over to H&M real quick, okay? ;-)

By the way, it wouldn’t do to tell you how those dresses rock with class, so here are a couple photos!

The Models are Out to Get Us!

March 1, 2007 by Designer Ella

I keep arguing against the poutiness in models. It’s not just lingerie ads with sexy full lips, I haven’t clarified - no! it’s full on evil-eye-death-stare moody looks. Perhaps after this article settles in your minds I will have to re-run our last poll, on which your opinions were pretty close.

    • Sexy!: 44% (8)
    • Fugly AND scary!: 22% (4)
    • My smiling dog is cuter!: 33% (6)
  • Are Pouty Models Cute?

    Total Votes : 18

Overall, anti-pout won over but just barely. More overwhelming responses were found in the previous poll, “Are Models Hot?” with a vote toward No! out of 46 total.

But now just see what I really am referring to when I say that pouty models are not attractive:

Models mad & ugly

And now you see why I think designers want them to look ugly, especially with that Dior hair ‘do. Ugggghh. These ladies truly look like demons about to rip fashionistas’ and journalists’ throats out.

A smiling face does not attract from a fabulous (or otherwise) ensemble nearly as much as a monstrous freak which could shoot deathly lasers from its eyes any second. No. Or a model slash actress who could easily appear in a guest spot on a Joss Whedon show as the evil foe, and not need any makeup! Ha. I wish it were funny.

Why is this okay? Why do people think these women are pretty? I was pretty moody and sullen myself in high school, and you know what it got me? Well, not dates! If you looked like a runway model in your driver’s license photo, I’d bet you’d be even more embarrassed than with your current.

Stop the uglification of probably perfectly okay looking girls. Let’s not anymore treat models like objects bending to society’s will - it means we must let them eat and cease drug abusing as well!

I’m not sure if models are humans, too, but let’s allow them to be!

Runway Report: Men’s Fashion Frights, Coming & Going

February 13, 2007 by Designer Ella

The blogosphere is abuzz with frightful male fashion put on the runway last week.

We have male, loose-crotched leggings from Marni.

Male leggings - Marni

They’re supposed to become “in” for the guys? Oh, no! No, seriously. Wrong. I know men, I almost understand men - and no, will never happen. (Although I honestly don’t know the gay male perspective yet - it should be a goal to buddy up with one.)

Next, the going view. It’s Heatherette, of course, and what’s there to say? They sent a man in a rear-less jumpsuit with Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz printed all over it; matching accessories to boot. But what is there to comment with really? It’s not meant to be true fashion, is it? Spectacle on the designer runway, out of place in this world and the tents. Entertaining? Well, nudity usually is. Here, I’ve consored it, but you can find the pictures by searching Google Blogs. I think my censoring is more amusing in a true way, anyway!

Here’s looking forward to London!
