So why on Earth am I avoiding fash blogging during Fashion WEEK?

February 26, 2008 by Designer Ella

Cat WalkIt’s so important to do. It could help this “career” and improve chances (at least from 0.001%) of attending shows. It’s expected, prudent, required(???) and I’m crazy not to.

Blog about the shows during the fashion weeks. And why the heck have I mostly not blogged ‘t all?! (With just one post on a show, and nothing about my Marc Jacobs!!!)

I’m sick of it. What’s expected, what’s done by everyone … and like our current subtitle reads, a basic issue with the “style-us quo.” It’s no good excuse, really, I know. But I couldn’t bring myself, somehow, to do it.

And why not just blog about other things? Possibly the guilt of not doing what I should be doing … and probably the fact that runway shows are unavoidable.

I don’t even really support my decision … I’m just burnt out - yes, burnt out from past years. Back when I covered as much as possible while attending college. With that issue behind me, what the fab is my un-fabbing problem??!

I’m working on thinking of creative alternatives to mass-produced, media-marketed, model-splayed, over-saturation of the mundane and force-fed. Posts in the near future (not long term 100%) will feature the anti all-that. See what’s caused my ill-feelings toward prĂȘt-a-porter is my resurrection of crafting and designing bags after being moved into my apartment enough to justify the extra time spent. Recently, I’ve taken up my destiny-craft; weaving, and it’s allowing me to work faster and I feel confident I can produce purses on a regular basis from now on. Even though I make negative money from it so far, it’s what I really-really-really wish I could be doing full time.

And that interest in indie flows into almost every part of my life, which causes a desire to blog differently. Yet I know that’s not what my long-time — and new-discoverers through old-style posts — want. I need to maintain a balance, and most importantly, just publish. It is my hope I can do it regularly again.

As for the past few weeks, I’m sure many of you understand my woes. Anyone feel similarly?

Designer Ella,

I absolutely hear you about how the shows being covered by everyone and it being done before.

I would love to attend shows and cover them, but I prefer personal style to fashion.

I have ideas/opinions and I’d love to talk more with you if you’re interested! I hope to hear from you soon!

hurrah! Sounds great, do something different. I myself do cross-stitch although I have so little time to do it I don’t have the heart to take any of my clothes out of rotation for so long to embellish them. I’m looking forward to what you are going to do new!

Hi Ella. As a partner of Coutorture, my daughter and I have been following your blog for a while and have found it not only informative but enjoyable. We have found the content to be valuable, so don’t get too fed up. We would miss your voice.

Our site visitors would appreciate your content as I think we appeal to the same demographic group. Our blog, http://girl-woman-beauty-brains-blog.com, tracks
fashion and beauty trends on a daily basis and would likely be of value to your visitors. I would like to suggest that we trade links.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,
Beckie (in Ugg slippers)

(Sorry to leave this as a comment. I couldn’t get your email to go through.)

From one fashion blogger to another. I hear ya sister! I support your ‘holiday’.

For me I find fashion week so frustrating because I’m just getting my head wrapped around the season that I’m about to be in let alone months from now. On top of that it’s like a big tease because I can’t buy any of it yet.

Next fashion week check your guilt to the curb and blog about… um… your nail polish chipping or world hunger. Or both. ;)

Kudos to you on trying to find your passion and I completely understand. I think if you follow your heart and voice, the blog will come around to where you want it to be. I must admit that I just recently found your blog and was sad to see that you hadn’t been posting. I read many of your previous articles and enjoyed your writing. Keep it up!

I completely understand! I have totally adopted the diy movement, and since I’m an artist I was already in the mindset to never pay for something I can make. I love spinning, knitting, crocheting, felting, oooh pretty much everything! I’m in a weaving class right now and I’m loving the huge floor loom! I have my own etsy site (www.rawfish.etsy.com).

I am also working for a small entrepreneurial company called Sovereignty KO Collections. Karyn, the founder noticed the market’s trend to ignore ladies with larger sized feet- so she tailored her e-commerce store around those women’s needs. She specifically buys high class, high end shoes in variety of styles. I completely support her efforts in this, since this niche market has been consistently disregarded. Plus all of us entrepreneurs have to stick together! :) You can check her website out at http://www.skocollections.com

So I think right now is the time to say to hell with what trends are telling us and to go with our hearts! Best of luck to you!!

Great idea! Don’t get caught up in the norm. That’s why I enjoy your blog so much, it’s completely different!

Thank you so much for your comments! You helped urge me to come back. I’ve been blogging at MyItThings, but about indie ITs, and I was wondering about whether I should come back here. Maybe once a week, but wondering if I could keep up with it. So I tested waters before replying to you, and I think I’m lovin’ it!

More indie will come here, including jewelry like I used to do anyway, but lots will be on the MyItThings website. It’s not common there, so I thought a whole columnist doing it would be good for them, and so far it’s great. And the Etsy community is loving me.

Well I’ll keep writing about what I feel like and not put pressure on myself. It seems to be going that there’s less shopping and more commenting on stuff I see around the fashionsphere, which is pretty nice.

I’ll be working on a post about this and thanking you, too. I hope to see you!!
