Global Warming Speeding up Fashion Seasons?

September 4, 2007 by Designer Ella

This year global warming may cause thinking ahead to Fall Fashion to become even more important than some fashionistas may realize. This is important for both buyers and small-run independent sellers and designers who create or put out supply closer to the “need” date. Why? Why when one would think Summer should last longer, with “warming”? Well, global warming is more complicated than it sounds, and we all see effects from it that we may not, or perhaps no one could, have predicted. Around Massachusetts, the late-Summer effect has been a very dry climate, with nary a rain drop in my area. And a surprising, odd, side effect of that has been our leaves have already been “turning” a good deal. Many have fallen to the grounds below the trees as well. While weather seems about normal for my area; hot and humid with some cool “New England surprise” spells mixed in—Fall foliage has already switched us a season ahead.

So aesthetically, the season has turned, and we may already want some foliage-hued accessories, and summer scarves might be a more popular idea, if we want that Autumn look during an August-feeling early September.

And practically, I can’t say if other aspects of nature will take cue from its colours, but there is a possibility that cold weather may follow suit and arrive earlier than usual, as well. Even during “global warming”.

Hopefully the calendar will catch up with the forest and things will seem to even out. In the mean time I think I need to crank out my stringy scarves I have ready to make.

Also in order and seemingly out of whack, I need to do some “Spring cleaning” first. And may I mention that today I noticed another odd, this time Spring-like, unseasonal pop of colour in our backyard—the yellow of dandelions. Is this year really strange, or have I just not paid attention to pretty weeds’ life patterns before?

To fellow designers, I suggest cranking out autumn leaf bracelets and cozy socks … ASAP! Just in case it helps. ;-)

Wouldn’t the early fall foliage mean the temperature is dropping?

No one wants the Summer to end but before you move all the Summer clothes out of your closet we think you should read this. Many of your Summer dresses can be transformed to fit into your Fall wardrobe. While they don’t necessarily ALL work for the Fall, many of them do.

Take for example this Red & Black Polka Dot Dress by Sugar Lips. It’s the perfect cool and comfortable Summer dress but easy to wear during the cooler months. Add a great pair of black tights and either a black velvet blazer or black cropped sweater, a great pair of heels or boats, and this dress just became all season. Not to mention, it can also be work appropriate. Double bonus!

Another great dress to give you options for fall is this Black Cotton Cocktail Dress by A To Z. A solid neutral dress gives you a few more options than a patterned dress. With this piece, you could put a great long sleeve tee underneath in either a color or a neutral. Layer a great jacket or cardigan over it. Again, with black you can play with color or pattern. Since this dress is solid you can add solid, patterned, or textured tights depending on your choices for your top. Layered with a jacket, cardigan, or long sleeve tee it’s work appropriate. If you want to dress it up, add a great belt.

We hope this helps you maximize your wardrobe.
