Tarty Celeb Costumes

November 1, 2006 by Designer Ella

Glam featured Celebrities in Halloween Costumes, which should be a fun and interesting bit of entertainment, but instead the costumes are frightening in a moral and intellectual way, not by triggering reactions from ghoulish masks and makeup — but, well, from the disgusting portrayal of flesh (sexy, not dead) by today’s pop artists and socialites.

What is wrong with these girls?

It’s not just these obviously tarty pop culture “pros” with this problem, it’s society in general. If one searches the Internet for a woman’s costume, mostly skanky skin and sexually-themed costumes will pop up.

Where does this issue originate? What do you think?

I think people just treat it as a chance to ‘let their hair down’ without repercussions. Although in these cases, none of them are wearing that much less than usual!

I wrote a paper on ritualised behaviours years ago which I’ve mostly forgotten, but I think the gist of it was that behaviours we’re innately capable of that aren’t allowed by our society (e.g. violence, promiscuous sexuality) will often be expressed in some sort of ritualised fashion instead — e.g. some sporting events are labelled ritualised violence by academics.

So maybe Halloween’s become a festival of ritualised exhibitionism… or maybe it’s just one more photo op ;)
