Why I will Never Wear all Designer

June 5, 2006 by Designer Ella

When I read fashion blogs that tell/claim/show personally owned items, or complete outfits, with crazy-expensive, IT designer names—I’m shocked with envy and a little disgusted with boasting such a lifestyle both to the poor blog readers and in spite of the impoverished state those Haves put society in.
Neiman Marcus - Diane vonFurstenberg
An item here or there is superb; it’s fabulous. But is it still luxury when there’s one piece in every ensemble? Big business and rich greed leave people hungry and cold, and New Money doesn’t know how to take care of it (like celebs with lavish excesses).

Yes, I can’t afford this now, and yes I do hope to someday—but I’m talking a Gucci bag once every few years, some Rebecca Taylor and Nanette Lepore, plenty of items between $100 and $200, and the occasional Marc Jacobs apparel item that I fall in love with.

Yes, my shoe shopping budget will upgrade to above $100, but that will be about quality. I really want to be comfortably and fabulously wealthy, but I don’t want to saturate my blog with such snobbitude—I want to remain a normal girl.

I just want to put it out there, now, that I plan to always look out for those without the means, even while now I still can’t seem to understanding forcing myself to live in mine.

(And maybe someday I can wear/carry more of the items I blog about on High Fashion High.)

I run fashion blog The Fashionable Housewife and I post outfits everyday for my readers to look at and learn from. Very rarely do my outfits even include a designer item because quite frankly, I can’t afford it!

I too dislike seeing people brag about what they have on their blogs.

Sometimes I discuss handbag splurges, but it just shows that I’m nutty. Ha. I don’t do it often, and I don’t even have a Gucci or LV, so I’m behind many!

Thanks for your comment.

Wow…talk about timing…I’ve been having this revelation myself (as in over the past few weeks recently), and am planning to blog about something similar in upcoming weeks…I’m in the same boat as you. I grew up waiting for the day I’d be able to buy expensive stuff all the time, but now that I have a “real job” and can afford some expensive stuff…I don’t make enough to warrant buying the most expensive thing all the time. I saw some Missoni tank tops at the mall a week or so ago, and even if I was rich, I don’t know if I could bring myself to buy a $400 tank top….lol. I just posted about my Gucci sunglasses, but those were a pretty big deal for me. I too don’t have a LV or Gucci purse….I (hopefully) have a LV in my upcoming future, but I think my best purse right now is maybe Coach or DB…..one fine day though! This post is great…I was just thinking this weekend about how my stlye is going from less full-on-name-brand to name-brand here and there with some other random items….especially vintage stuff! :)

totally. a designer thing here and there is really nice, and most of all - cherished. I just hate it when designer items are flaunted around willy-nilly as if its normal to have a $240 cashmere tank top in lime green (see here). Besides, who wears a cashmere tank top? cashmere sweaters at j. crew are only $70 or so. There is definitely a line between “expensive because its high quality and made to last and always in style” and “expensive only because you bought it from Neiman Marcus”.

Designer Ella Says:

Thanks, gals.

Diana, let me know when you’ve posted that entry!

I was a little envious of your Gucci sunglasses. I think I might someday want designer sunglasses. I like Chanel’s logo for it. But we all spend money on different types things according to what we think is worth it. I must draw the line at bags (mostly), for myself, or things would get out of hand.

Lauren, cashmere sweaters are only $70 at J. Crew?! Hmm, some items are on sale, but mostly still regular price. I can wait!

Sarah-Jean Says:

I splurged on sunglasses. Versace. I figured it was a good designer item to have because you can wear them with anything!

Diana Says:

You hit the nail on the head Sarah-Jean! I got the glasses b/c I plan on them being pretty much the only pair I wear this summer…and fall….and most likely winter….hehe. I figure anything I can get good wear out of makes it even more worthwhile!

Designer Ella Says:

Hmmm, and I have so many bags that each one is carried less often. But sunglasses can get lost or broken, which scares me. I have lovely cases now, but I’m not ready for that leap. Perhaps when I venture into the sun more often. ;-) Florida!

Oh, girls, don’t make me start to want designer shades! I’m still safe for now…

Diana Says:

hehe….you’d be amazed at how paranoid i am w/ my shades…here’s a quick funny story. the sunday after i bought my glasses, i wanted to go ice skating (did it for years and go by myself all the time). anywho, i wanted to wear my new shades for the car trip over there. but then i thought, “what if someone takes them out of my bag while im skating?” ok, i’ll put them in my car. “Wait, what if someone steals my car, then my glasses will be gone!” i decided to leave them at home, but can you believe that the first thing that came to my mind if my car was stolen was that my new and very expensive shades would be gone? kinda silly, but either way, I’m veeeerrrry careful with them :)

kim Says:

hear, hear. love this entry. thanks for putting out a reality check. fashion, beauty and design are vital parts of life but so are compassion and ideals of social equality.

Designer Ella Says:

Diana, I love how you stressed the sunglasses with the thought of your car being stolen. I’m the same way with my bags. High fashion is so silly in this way.

Thanks, Kim!
