Fashion Don’t, Fashion Never - Dr. Martens

January 15, 2006 by Designer Ella

Dr. Martens - 1460 Series (Black Smooth) - Women'sWhen I was an impressionable young minded lass, there was quite a buzz over the shoe we called “Doc Martens.” (FYI, This was in my teens, in my wee youth there was the Reebok sneaker with a hanging logo — my first desire for a logo! Ahh, memory strolls. Anyway…) I knew these Dr. Martens were ugly, but I felt the strong tug of the masses. I never did buy one pair, but there was one style I found myself nearly able to wear: the Mary Jane.

Such is the ugliness of this shoe that I must cry out, once more, that THIS is not a shoe! It is not even a boot! No!! I dare say even that! This is a rugged, construction-work-ready, monstrosity of an item of footwear!!! Why, why, why would this be liked for appearance?

I shudder, I cower, I cringe. I must fight back!

I can’t understand a woman wearing such a shoe, but some men’s styles are actually nice. Oh, wait, THAT is labeled woman’s. Never mind.

The production of this sort of shoe to be aimed at women must end!

Oops. As an aging punk/hipster or “cryptster”, if you prefer, I must confess that I own several pairs of Doc Martens. Besides helping to lend a bit of street cred to punk attire, they are just so comfy. They are an orthopedic shoe, after all. So, since I’ve obviously made an extreme footwear faux pas, could you perhaps suggest something more stylish for me? Especially in a Mary Jane.

And the kitten flat, the very popular Dollhouse Freely (cute!):

Those are trendy, chic & stylish, yet perhaps a bit quirky.

Or, you could just get the most feminine of the Dr. Marten, if you need the orthopedic feel. I already linked to that one under “Mary Jane,” above.

Thanks a bunch!! I feel more stylish already!

Thank you for helping put another nail in the Dr. Marten coffin! I was forced to spend an entire semester of class sitting near a woman who was otherwise attractive, but seemed to own only ONE pair of shoes. They were brown Dr. Marten oxfords. Can you imagine? I mean, the girl was obviously not poor, she could have bought a second pair of shoes! It would have been better if she just wrapped her feet with many plastic shopping bags and taped it off at the ankle. Yuk.

Yeah, Doc Martins are an odd case. I had a few pairs as a teen while running around with punks/goths/etc. They weren’t comfortable and looking back on it, they looked horrible with the whole goth look even. What WERE we thinking?!?

I guess I dont see the problem with boots like these with a rough pair of jeans on a weekend spent outside. I mean, we cant wear our manolos all the time. (and I do think they look better than a pair of nasty tennis shoes)

(sorry im replying to a OLD post)

Designer Ella Says:

It’s fine, thank for your genuine comment.

I don’t even believe in “rough” jeans (whatever it may mean to different people). And clunky shoes just don’t look good on women. And we are women. What do you mean by “nasty” tennis shoes? I imagine that to be old & ratty, and no one should let apparel get worn out.

For the naturey weekend, I’d like sandals or even wedges. :-)
