Oh, the Compliment Impulse Spend Phenomenon

May 21, 2005 by Designer Ella

One downside to being a fashionista is when a person, even a woman, when we are not attracted to the women, fawns over our shoes. It brings out our vulnerabilities.

When, “I like your shoes!” is followed by further questions that downright proves true interest, we lose our inhibitions. We gush. We enter a state of mania, it is true.

When a smart salesperson employs this tactic, watch out! The perfectly crafted, “I like your shoes!” can cause us fabulous ladies to indeed become fashion victims, in a sense.

“I like your shoes!”

And I immediately write a $10 check to charity. Yes, it is a charity, yes it is for the clean water, ohh yes, it is important.

But you must note that I am a poor stylista who over spends her budget (wait, I have a budget?) on fashionable items.

This, similar to the impulse-buy, is the compliment-spend, nay, the compliment-impulseoverspend. For although it was not the high pitched-for donation, she was over-pleased with the dollar amount. (Oops?) I must learn to have the same appreciation for the dollar as I do what I buy with those dollars. In that second, remember that rush of satisfaction, $10 was a small amount to me.

Oh, the inner-workings of the world. You do baffle me.
