Ella’s Fashion Rules

December 22, 2004 by Designer Ella

- Mini-skirts are out. Skirts should rise just above the knee on short legs, or above to at the knee on longer legs. You CAN find those skirts, short girls! If you are shorter, you want your whole knee to be visible. Tricky thing is that sometimes skirts that are above the knee still leave the knee invisible from the height of people’s heads.

- Layers, done right, look fabulous. Thin layers, not the winter-bundle-up kind. (Pair this look with fabulous shoes!)

- Dark jeans look best.
- If you have wide hips, opt for a small flair or wide boot cut. TIP: Wide leg small flairs!
- Pin-stripe and tweed pants make you look professional and fab! (Wide leg)
- These pants draping over your shoes look so delicious.
- The best way to fold your pants is so that they crease in the FRONT. Yum.

- A great pair of shoes can MAKE the outfit. A usually plain outfit can turn EXTRAORDINARY by a fabulous pair of shoes.

- Pointy-toed shoes look good. It’s an inexplicable fact. But the good news is that they CAN feel comfortable. Shop around.

- Heels over three inches kill your feet.
- Never wear/keep those gorgeous shoes if you can’t wear them at least walking around your house without killing your feet.
- DO insert pads into your shoes to make the perfect fit. Therefore, a size larger is better than smaller!

- It’s important to have at least a few pairs of really fantastic dress shoes. At least one to three of those should be flats. You should probably have more flats than pumps, to retain a little bit of sensibility.

- A blazer makes you look professional, but not if it’s too small, buttoned, and your stomach’s trying to pop out of it. Buy a blazer, wear a blazer, if you think you shouldn’t button it, don’t.
- A great pair of dress shoes makes you look more professional. Some shoes (pointy-toed patent leather with bows?) can make any outfit POP with gorgeous-girly-ready-for-a-fantastic-evening dressiness.

- Sneakers are not shoes.

And purses should be made of chameleon skin so they would change to match all outfits?

Miniskirts can never be out! True, the ruffled nylon/lycra polyester-blend carp* has been dead for a while. But Paco Rabanne’s miniskirted shifts and colorblocked wool, Ben Sherman’s Twiggy checks, C. Ronson’s 70’s inspired and Supernova’s graffitti skirts are classic. They will never die.
